In 2005, author David Foster Wallace was asked to give the commencement address to the 2005 graduating class of Kenyon College. However, the resulting speech didn’t become widely known until 3 years later, after his tragic death. It is, without a doubt, some of the best life advice we’ve ever come across, and perhaps the most simple and elegant explanation of the real value of education.

We made this video, built around an abridged version of the original audio recording, with the hopes that the core message of the speech could reach a wider audience who might not have otherwise been interested. However, we encourage everyone to seek out the full speech (because, in this case, the book is definitely better than the movie).

Google Glass is a wearable computer with a head-mounted display (HMD) that is being developed by Google in the Project Glass research and development project, with the mission of producing a mass-market ubiquitous computer. Google Glass displays information in a smartphone-like hands-free format, that can interact with the Internet via natural language voice commands. While the frames do not currently have lenses fitted to them, Google is considering partnering with sunglass retailers such as Ray-Ban or Warby Parker, and may also open retail stores to allow customers to try on the device. The Explorer Edition cannot be used by people who wear prescription glasses, but Google has confirmed that Glass will eventually work with frames and lenses that match the wearer’s prescription; the glasses will be modular and therefore possibly attachable to normal prescription glasses.

Dove Real Beauty Sketches Ad

Famous for its use of real women posing confidently, wearing nothing but white underwear and big toothy grins, Dove’s ‘Real Beauty’ campaign has continued to reinvent female-focused marketing since its launch over a decade ago.

Now, Real Beauty Sketches, the campaign’s latest instalment, is taking the internet by storm by revealing that women really are their own harshest critics.

In the video above, forensic artist Gil Zamora (who sketches a handful of women from description alone) notes the disparity between the way women describe their own appearance and the way they are described by others.

My 3 Cents on Cancer - Jack Andra:

Jack is a fifteen year old freshman in high school. He developed a paper sensor that could detect pancreatic, ovarian and lung cancer in five minutes for as little as 3 cents. He conducted his research at John Hopkins University. This research could change the face of cancer and promote early detection. He has been selected as the Intel 2012 ISEF winner and has won awards at multiple national and international math competitions. Jack is on the national junior whitewater kayaking team and enjoys playing with his dog and folding origami. In thespirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. This is the Camp Daybed from designer Stephanie Hornig. It’s a daybed with an integrated sleeping bag. Sure you could just lay a sleeping bag out on your existing couch, but if you don’t bungee-cord yourself to the frame you risk rolling off in your sleep (sleeping bags are slippery!) This one you can’t fall off of without bringing the whole couch down on top of you. Sad fact: I slept in a sleeping bag for four years growing up because I was afraid of ghosts and I figured the fewer unsecured bed openings, the better. I used to sweat in them so bad they started growing mold. “Sick!” Not as sick as if a ghost managed to sneak up my butt and made me poop my pants on the school bus.

What makes a man a man? That’s the question that the Times Of India posed to its male readers.

In the wake of a highly-publicized gang rape in which the 23-year-old female victim died from the injuries she sustained, the Indian newspaper printed an ad on January 22nd asking men to respect women — as part of their manhood. “The true test of your manhood is how you treat a woman. All women. Any woman. Every woman,” the quarter-page ad read. “If you do not respect a woman, you are only half a man.” The ad also questions attributes and behaviors traditionally associated with being a man — having a “six-pack, gelled hair and biceps,” “rash driving” and being well-endowed.
